As per usual practice, the Romney campaign has prepared a video to introduce the candidate to the world for his big moment at the convention, and today they leaked a teaser of it. People have been remarking for a while that he has not done anything to "define himself" in the eyes of the voters, and boy, oh boy, this belated video does it. I have to admit that my own view of Romney has changed a bit watching this. I have never seen him so relaxed, so warm, so compassionate, so full of humor, as in this short video. It's a side of him we haven't seen! And I have to admit that I wonder if some independent voters will look at him with new eyes after this.
For those who can't watch video, I'd post a transcript but the point is not what he says but how he says it. I've just never seen Romney so natural and emotional. He even gets choked up at one point! But there is one moment of path-breaking honesty -- when he admits freely that part of his role is to do things that might be considered "unethical." I think that this refreshing frankness will appeal to a lot of voters. I think it's the first campaign promise he's made that I really expect him to keep!
I'm not exactly going to switch sides or anything, but... darned if this doesn't make me go a bit soft on the Mittster. Cheers.
